          Introduction to Design: The Designer

          Sigbjørn Winingstad, Harald Skulberg,

          Christian Sørnes and Leonoor Beukers

Introduction to Design is the first course

in the Foundation curriculum. As a prac-

tice-based studio course it provides a gener-

al introduction to design and to three areas

          of specialization: Industrial Design, Inter-

action Design and Service Design. It also

provides inspiration for the upcoming study.

The assignments introduce 2D and 3D de-

sign methods. In addition the students are

          taught freehand drawing, material technol-

ogy and architectural and design history.

          Introduction to Design:

          The Fields We Teach

          Sigbjørn Windingstad, Harald Skulberg,

          Christian Sørnes and Nina Bjørnstad

This course is the second part of the intro-

duction to design, and it builds on the first

semester course. As a rehearsal- and prac-

tice-based course it continues the general

introduction into design and into the three

          areas of specialisation: Industrial Design,

Interaction Design and Service Design. It

also encourages students to look toward a

long design project. In addition, students are

          taught digital drawing, material technology

and modern architectural and design history.

          Design for Diversity

          Tom Vavik and Nicholas Stevens

Design for Diversity focuses on creating

products and services for the largest

number of people to instil sensitivity

for context, and empathic user insight.

          Students are trained in user-centered

and inclusive design processes and given

          an introduction to product semantics,

Interaction Design and 3D modelling. In

addition the students are taught mechanics

and an introduction to design theory.

          Methods and Technologies in the

          Design Process

          Steinar Killi and Harald Skulberg

The first part of the semester focuses

          on design methodologies and product

          analysis through practical assignments. An

          existing product’s design and structure

is explored, as well as the potential for

product optimisation. The second part of

the semester focuses on technologies in the

          design process. Students use well-known

          manufacturing methods such as injection

          molding, extrusion, blow molding, and

          rapid manufacturing. In addition, the

          students are taught production technology

          and design theory.
