Scarcity and Creativity in Latitude 68n
Christian Hermansen, Michael Hensel
and Solveig Sandness
The Scarcity and Creativity studio was
invited by the town of Nusfjord, Lofoten, to
build two facilities with the aim of improv-
ing the amenities offered to visitors: 1. A
tensile structure outside the restaurant that
defines an area where alcohol can be served,
and 2. A terrace containing a hot tub and a
sauna, located in a natural sea pool carved
by the sea from solid rock.

Zona Colonial in Santo Domingo is the old-
est permanent settlement on the American
continent from where the Spaniards prolif-
erated the grid layouts for their new cities
and its grid plan that became the model of
the NewWorld. The complexities of loca-
tion, climate, history and politics challenged
students to define a suitable strategy. The
final goal was to define a series of critical
architectural prototypes and to assess
their potential for a sustainable renewal of
Colonial Zone. Through a series of 9 inter-
ventions the students tried to develop archi-
tecture that was capable of positioning itself
between autonomy and locality.
Urban Design: The New City Center
Peter Hemmersam
The course addressed the role of retail and
shopping centres in the development of six
small and medium sized towns in Norway.
The students mapped the urban space. They
engaged directly with municipalities, and
with public planning discourse through
newspaper articles. The studio was organ-
ized in collaboration with Bylab at the Nor-
wegian Foundation for Architecture and
gave input to a conference for municipal
planners.
Complex buildings
Johanne Borthne
Using Galleri Oslo as a case, the course en-
couraged students to investigate and chal-
lenge familiar large-scale typologies and
programs in an urban situation. Through
collective intelligence gathering and refer-
ence studies, students arrived at projects
for transforming and reprogramming the
existing large-scale structure in a complex,
urban situation.
