After the financial crisis hit Greece, the number of visitors at

the Casino Mont Parnes outside Athens increased drastically.

Simultaneously the building underwent severe decay. This is

hidden from guests, who are only permitted access to certain

controlled and highly monitored areas. The casino is an intro-

verted structure ignorant of the ruins surrounding it; a place

removed from time and context. It is a mirror of the crisis –

a contemporary tragedy where the action is played out in re-

al-time. The project is a narrative where the building is read as

the reality of the gamblers through the lenses of surveillance

cameras. The only way to inhabit and exit the casino without be-

ing under surveillance is to escape through the system itself; the

interconnected infrastructure made up of fire escapes, airshafts,

drop ceilings and service areas. In search of an escape from

reality, the ultimate escape is through the monitoring room.
