RCAT / OCEAN STUDIO
Master studio | One semester
The studio developed projects for two neglected inner urban public spaces at key locations in Oslo. The proposed
auxiliary or supplementary architectures provide for a rich variety of activities and experiences, in the form of
an extended transitional space that offering varied degrees of shelter, while remaining only partially enclosed in
order to maintainmaximum public accessibility and usability. Focus was placed on the use of complex membrane
and cable-net systems. Physical form-finding methods, computational modelling and advanced visualisation
methods and tools, such as Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality, played a key role in the design process. The
development of supplementary designs constitutes a field for interdisciplinary collaboration between architects,
industrial designers, structural and environmental engineers that can significantly benefit from collaborative
research by design. The students worked in teams on four projects that demonstrate the broad scope of design
that can be accomplished with the chosen material system and working methods.
