Manure & Megabytes
a future scenario for the norwegian countryside
In principal, ‘Manure & Megabytes’ is an utopian cattle farm which produces dairy,
meat and, more important, manure. e manure is processed, burned, transformed
into electricity and this energy runs a server farm.
is scenario could be seen as a kind of dystopia. It is based on a claim which says that
Norwegian agriculture is arti cial kept alive through subsidies, possible by national
wealth. A right wing political shi will change the agricultural operation as we know it
today. Only the ttest farmer will survive in competition with Scandinavian farmers
which are way stronger in terms of e ciency and productivity. e farm on ‘Tallerås’ is
seen as the ttest on Dovre. In Dovre municipality there are c. 2500 cattle, which suc-
cessively is bought and implemented in the operation at Tallerås. ose who sell their
animals move either to cities, or collaborate with Tallerås as workers.
is big scale farm is producing milk, meat and a lot of waste. Handling the manure
from the cattle is traditionally an operation of making fertilizer for growing crops, but
now today there is more and more common to look upon animal manure as a source
for green energy. Technical competence is drawn by this possibility for making electrici-
ty of manure. Even further, competence related to server farming, due to ideal climate
and an easy way of reaching the global market, is drawn to Tallerås.

Manure and Megabytes is a utopian cattle farm that produces dairy products, meat, and manure.
The manure is processed, burned and transformed into electricity that is used to run a server
park. The political s ift tak g pl ce in Norway today from a social-democratic to a conservative
government, could possibly change the agricultural industry as we know it. Maybe only the fittest
farmer will surviv in competition with Scandinavi n farmers ho are much stronger in terms of
efficiency and productivity. The farm at Tallerås is the fittest in Dovre. In the municipality, there
are about 2500 cattle that, according to the scenario of this proposal, are bought and used in the
operation at Tallerås. The farmers who sell their animals will probably move, either to cities or
to Tallerås as workers. Handling the manure from the c ttle is t aditionally an operation that
makes fertiliser for growing crops, but today it is common to use animal manure as a source of
green energy.
