Introduction to Urbanism:
A new town

South west of Oslo, at the head of Dram-
mensfjorden is Lierstranda—an industrial
area to be transformed into an attractive
urban fabric with 13,035 dwellings, cultural
institutions, schools, sports and business.
The task was to design a plan based on the
site’s inherent qualities, with three main
zones that should be interpreted and adapt-
ed to the scale of Lierstranda. The students
are also given an introduction to urban
planning history.

This course examines the logics of housing
construction in Oslo and what lies under-
neath the perceived crisis in the housing
market in Oslo. Students identify relevant
sites and design new housing areas. Stu-
dents are required to have passed or to
complete the exam philosophicum.
