THE ASYLUM

Foundation first year | 7-week workshop

The assignment was to develop an architectural concept for an asylum reception

centre for 10-30 families in a city block in Hausmannsgate, Oslo. The first phase

of the project consisted of research done in groups by the students. Each group

covered different subtopics, including analyzing the site and the neighbour-

hood in terms of physical and programmatic properties, and the conditions for

refugees in the perspective of the individual, in Norway and at the rest of the

globe. The research was presented and debated in a student-organized seminar.

In the second phase of the project, the students worked individually to develop

a structural concept for the asylum on site, based on the collective research of

the previous phase. The main structure of the project was to be developed in

wood, and be capable of creating a variation of small and big spaces outdoor and

indoor, private and public. By the end of the project, the student ought to have

developed a main concept for the organization of the asylum, and a personal

          attitude to the program.
