With a growing population and lack of area to grow food,
we need to find new ways of providing food and energy.
Many look upon algae as our last major resource: as food,
as a renewable source of energy, and as the source of under-
standing the oceans and a tool to protect them. Algae are
also the largest oxygen supplier in the world.
The assignment was to make a seaweed farm, with a bio-
refinery, an algae knowledge garden, a research lab, a marina,
a seaweed observatory, an underwater garden of local species,
a restaurant and a viewpoint for tourists. The project is a
comment on the major development of the oil and gas indus-
tries in the Barents area. It acts as a symbol of a more sustain-
able use of nature in the north. By bringing tourists, locals and
researchers to the farm, the project seeks to enrich the daily
life of the local, coastal communities.
