Arctic and Subarctic landscapes are more than ever contested as they are faced with an in-
creased interest in mineral extraction and energy production. The conference aimed to iden-
tify different transformation forces in the landscape, and served as a side event to the Arctic
Frontiers conference at the University of Tromsø. Speakers at the event included: William
L. Fox (US), Kjartan Fløgstad (NO), Mattias Åhrén (SE/NO), Julia Martin (DE/UK), Michael
Bravo (UK), Anne Bråthen (NO), Siri Hermansen (NO).
In February 2013 the teachers and students of AHO Studio AS2 were present in Santo
Domingo at the international conference/ workshop
The Autonomy of the Grid
to discuss
possible strategies for the future growth of its old core – Zona Colonial. Zona Colonial
has declined rapidly since UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site, due to restrictions
imposed on building activities within its boundaries. The workshop was an attempt to
position the role of architecture in the urban rehabilitation processes and to imagine how
to continue to build on this protected place. The conference was organised in collaboration
with UNIBE School of Architecture and SO-IL Architects Idenburg - Liu, from New York.
