LIQUID URBANITY: ILADALEN FLOOD PARK

The story of the creek and the development of

the Ila neighbourhood exemplifies the trans-

formation of Oslo’s waterways from natural

creeks to piped sewers, and paved streets as

new drainage lines. However, during heavy

rains, the watershed of Ila finds its way back

to its historic traces, flooding the street in front

of the Oslo School of Architecture and Design

campus and causing sewer overflows to the

Akerselva river. The Iladalen Flood Park ad-

dresses the impeding stormwater problems of

the Oslo’s inner city setting, using bio-retention

to accommodate for fluctuating water volumes

while increasing the biological diversity and

          diversifying public space. Sculpted landforms

direct water through the large opens spaces

while smaller stone weirs control outflows.

Sectional richness has been carefully designed,

          particularly in relation to vegetation.
