REDESIGNING THE PUBLIC REALM IN THE CITY CENTRE OF BANDUNG, INDONESIA
ANNISA SOLIHAH SONTANI
Supervisor: Peter Hemmersam
The city centre in Bandung has its distinctive areas and landmarks. Each area offers
different types of urban space with various user groups and activities. However, there
are connectivity and accessibility issues resulting in a disintegrated city centre. This sit-
uation triggers the deterioration of its environment. Moreover, an unclear mental image
of the city centre has created problems for its users. Hence, the city centre of Bandung
no longer offers an attractive urban public space for people like it used to.
By taking the city centre as a study case, this project investigates to what extent the
physical environments of the city centre could address the need of user groups, and
reinforce their activities. A clear image of city centre will allow for good reciprocal
relationships between existing physical forms and current users. The project is also
expected to create more flexible public spaces that are able to accommodate many ac-
tivities. It further develops strategies such as integrating the city centre by enhancing
connectivity and accessibility; reusing existing built structures and transforming them
into new types of urban public spaces. It also looks into how user groups can act as
agents to enhance the public realm of the city centre.
