BACALHAU NETWORK BETWEEN PORTUGAL AND NORWAY
SARA MARIA C. AFONSO
Supervisor: Marianne Skjulhaug and Neven Fuchs-Mikac
Bacalhau is salted and dried codfish, and it is the product that connects Norway and Portugal. The existing
network is one-directional. The goal is to develop a network in both directions - importing the final product
bacalhau back from Portugal. The concept of the project is to create a new space where production meets
consumption, recreation and education. The project does the full circle—going back to the network between
Portugal and Norway, acting on the different challenges and potentials of the sites, and using the program as a
response strategy.
The circular building is part of a macro system, being the gate for the bacalhau network in Andenes, and so it
will become a network in itself. The building connects the inside and the outside. The exterior walls of the ex-
isting factory will become transparent, using polycarbonate, not only for the people to be able to see the process,
but also for improving the conditions of the workers. The tension between the old and the new is articulated as a
gap of light. The new structure is one big space where different functions appear as clusters. The factory can be
seen as an exhibition from the passerelle that encircles the factory and ends at the cooking school.
