EBB AND FLOW: SCENARIOS FOR UPCYCLING RECIPROCAL
LANDSCAPES IN ÅRDAL
PATRYCJA PERKIEWICZ
Supervisor: Kelly Shannon
Can the mining industry in Norway (with materials coming
from Brazil) be challenged and questioned from a landscape
stewardship perspective? The project examines a possible evo-
lution of the Årdal municipality by creating scenarios of a grow-
ing and declining settlement. A primary question is put forth:
how would scenarios affect local animal habitants, flora and
fauna, the city and its inhabitants, and the overall ecology? The
project developed two parallel scenarios, one as a ‘ghost town’
and another as an up-graded version of Årdal. As the tide ebbs
and flows, events, scenarios and consequences are examined
and visualized as ‘imagined chain of events’, a timeline that
explores a potential future for Årdal. New grids, new programs
and new identities encourage new ecologies as well as bring
new economies to the Årdalstangen and Øvre Årdal villages.
Foreseeing the closure of the aluminium industry would allow
for the reintroduction of agriculture and forestry as well as a
new economy of aquaculture in Øvre Årdal. In Årdalstangen,
adaptive re-use would combine hard- and soft engineering and
create new blue-green corridors to completely restructure the
town. By re-introducing old industries, new modern technolo-
gies and renewable energy, Årdal has the opportunity to redis-
cover its own identity as well as prosper.
