DRAMMEN+
ANDERS T. SLETBAK AND TRON OVE WISLØFF
Supervisor: Peter Hemmersam and Halvor Weider Ellefsen
The project proposes a large student housing project at Strømsø Square in Drammen outside
of Oslo. With a total of 574 residents in single and double rooms, the two buildings suggest a
greater use and mutual beneficial qualities of shared facilities. While the private rooms only
consist of a bedroom and a bath, the building has shared living rooms with views to the park
to the south as well as the square to the north, and up on the 13th floor with a view and down
by the street to watch the people outside. The residents have a large communal kitchen at the
street level in each building with more semi-private mezzanines on the first floor. The build-
ing also has terraces above the kitchens, study rooms, TV-lounges, shared washing facilities, a
climbing centre and an underground communal space for events between the two buildings.
The project is a response to the lack of student housing, which puts pressure on the private
rental housing market and gives room for unprofessional actors to profit from this housing short-
age. Through better public rent-controlled opportunities, the stipends that constitute the main
source of income for students can be kept low, so that the rent will not be just a wealth transfer
from students to people who can afford excess rental flats.
