This project co-designs medical and legal response systems to sexual violence
with different key stakeholders. The aim is to dignify integral aspects of the
response system.
Sexual violence is a complex contemporary problem in Oslo involving legal,
medical, and emotional complexities: Many crimes remain unreported; sexual
violence is still considered taboo and remains largely undiscussed; and victims
endure long psychological, physical and even legal recovery. Through our
initial research, we discovered that many elements of the response process
are unplanned and thus may create unnecessary difficulties for the victim and
service providers. By analysing the response services as a holistic system and
contrasting different points of views, we found many design opportunities.
Three conceptual solutions were explored: an integrated information
system; a humaine way to collect DNA evidence after an acute assault; and the
creation of guidelines for the new Sexual Assault Center (SAC) that will be
built in three years. The experiences from the SAC case will be analysed and
used as guidelines for design in similar fields. The aim is to open the field of
Sexual Assault Response (SAR) to design.
