CORRELATING EVOLUTIONARY INVENTIVE
PROBLEM-SOLVING IN BIOLOGY AND ARCHI-
TECTURE. A SYSTEMS APPROACH TO DESIGN
FUNDER:
AHO
SUPERVISOR:
Birger Sevaldson
The PhD project proposes an evolutionary systems
approach to architectural design based on a conver-
gence model. The design and development of two
types of structural systems is discussed: (i) ontology-
(ii) material-based. The former corresponds to Mate-
rial-Ontologies: a general, unified and open knowl-
edge-based system. This is developed to support and
activate the use of information and structural hierarchy,
as key design strategies and resources, for developing
material-based systems with multi functional and
adaptive properties towards architectural applications.
Case studies based on cellular materials of wood and
ceramics, including Nested Catenaries are presented.

The project aims to explicate the process of archi-
tectural practice in light of the growing demands of
universal design – design produces buildings, prod-
ucts and environments that are inherently accessible
to older people, people without disabilities and peple
with disabilities. Theory emerges from data collect-
ed through fieldwork within two practices according
to the methodology of Grounded Theory (Glaser and
Strauss, 1967). Following the daily life of architectural
teams designing cultural buildings, the project has col-
lected close up material with implementation of uni-
versal design as a lens for defining the data to be used.
Generating new hypotheses for future research in this
novel field of science is crucial to develop the field both
in academia and in the practice of architecture, as well
as in education.

THE PHOTOGRAPHIC ABSOLUTE:
AN ARCHITECTURAL BEGINNING
FUNDER:
AHO
SUPERVISORS: Halina Dunin-Woyseth, Per Olaf Fjeld,
Philip Ursprung
The project is propelled by my wish to introduce intu-
ition at the beginning of the creative process towards
an architecture, and it is based on the proposition
that photographic practice constitutes a beginning in
answering the question:
How can we disclose our intu-
itive insights and how can we bring these into the pro-
duction of spatial experience?
In the background of my wish is the cognizance
that analytical reason has come to dominate the
design of architecture and the belief that starting
from intuition and engaging this in a transactional
relationship with the intellect can endow the creative
process with an authentic footprint.

INTEGRATIVE DESIGN FRAMEWORK FOR
MULTIFUNCTIONAL PERFORMANCE IN WOOD
CONSTRUCTION
FUNDERS:
AHO
SUPERVISOR:
Bjørn Sandaker
The research investigates the potential of integrative
design approach to wood architecture. It sets out to
examine how wood traits can inform the design and
construction processes in order to achieve multifunc-
tional performance. It is proposed to establish a frame-
work for integration of digital with material domains,
traditional methods withmodern technology, structure
with material, form with function, manufacturing and
assembly logic with wood properties and behaviour.
It strives to answer what would be the consequences
for architecture and environment, both qualitative and
quantitative. Research by design is the main method
through which the research is to be carried out.
