SCIBE explored the relationship between scarcity and creativity
in the context of the built environment by investigating how con-
ditions of scarcity might affect the creativity of the different actors
involved in the production of architecture and urban design. The
research had two complementary strands. First the development
of a theory of scarcity relevant to the production of the built envi-
ronment and second an analysis of case studies in four European
cities: London, Oslo, Reykjavik, and Vienna. These two strands
informed each other, and resulted in a productive understanding
of scarcity that would have relevance to practitioners and policy
makers in the built environment.
Founded in 1994, OCEAN has been registered in Norway since
2008 as a not-for-profit association conducting interdisciplinary
research in design and is actively represented in Aalborg, Bar-
celona, Copenhagen, Gothenburg, Istanbul, London, Oslo and
Stockholm. The mission of OCEAN is to conduct inter- and trans-
disciplinary research by design in its specific areas of inquiry.
The network is lead by the Director of RCAT, Professor Michael
U. Hensel. OCEAN integrates expertise in architecture, biology,
civil and structural engineering, computational design, industrial
design, musical composition, and urban design.
