BioArctic, a marine network in Varangerfjord, is based on
kelp, a brown seaweed and macro algae. It proposes a regional
strategy that introduces a kelp farming industry as a generator
of food, energy and revenue for local communities. It further
delves into three projects: the hatchery, the kelp farm and the
integrated biorefinery. Together they constitute the three es-
sential locations for land- and ocean-based operations within
the process.
The project engages kelp in a variety of scales that stitches
together peripheral communities by establishing a framework
for the development of local industries. In the process, it
facilitates the region’s transition from a carbon-based to a
more sustainable bio-oriented economy.
