Gasoline remains the only imported source of energy in iceland. the pro-
ject proposes to test hydrogen technology on the rental car fleet as a
next step to fulfill iceland’s ambitions of becoming a hydrogen economy.
As a tourist commodity National Purist Routes explores iMF’s challenge.
it also suggests a possible model of funding for a much needed tourism
infrastructure, as it proposes a cooperation between public institutions
like the icelandic tourist Board and private partners like Hertz, Shell
and the national energy company Landsvirkjun. the filling stations are
developed as tourist destinations located along the Ring Road and the
national electricity grid.
