SHADOWS AND DARKNESS IN THE CITY

My wish to better understand the potential within shadows and darkness
comes primarily from a personal connection to the disease Erythropoietic
Protoporphyria (EPP). EPP is a genetic disorder that manifests itself most
obviously as an as an allergy to light. This project investigates how shadows
and darkness work within the social field of the city, and the consequent rela-
tionship between the public domain and the private sphere.
Expanding the public domain into shadow and darkness can generate a
more effective utilization of the existing urban fabric. I want to intensify the
use of the existing urban fabric, particularly at ground level, which assists in
preserving existing qualities. By looking at these issues and how they do, or
can, relate to shadows and darkness, it is possible to nurture or cultivate parts
of the city in shadow and darkness while finding ways for a person with EPP
to lead a more participatory life in the city.
