The Institute of Design offers a five-year Master of Industrial

Design within The Oslo School of Architecture and Design. The

first three years of the programme are considered the Founda-

tion and the last two years the Master. While the Institute does

not offer a bachelors degree, the first three years of the educa-

tion are accepted as equivalent. After successfully completing

the Foundation, all AHO students are eligible for entry into

the masters programme or a masters programme at another

          university.

The Institute offers a hybrid environment that educates spe-

cialised students with a common design thinking based in Foun-

dation study. Throughout the five years, students collaborate

with external practitioners and companies and with research

and development projects at the Institute. The completion of

the five-year master degree equips the students to enter prac-

tice as high-level, internationally relevant designers specialised

in key areas of Industrial Design, Interaction Design and Ser-

          vice Design.

The Foundation course prepares the student for specialised or

hybrid studies at the master level. A Systems Oriented Design

approach underpins each specialised or hybrid course of study.

All courses in the Foundation are mandatory; however, through-

out their Foundation studies, students may increasingly

            angle

their projects toward an area of focus, particularly in the latter

          part of the curriculum.

Foundation-level courses provide methods, tools and know-

ledge in preparation for the masters degree. Courses offered in

design methodology, computer-aided design and specific tool-

based areas, include: drawing, wood and metal workshops, CAD,

DAK, Adobe Creative Suite, Flash, and the Rapid prototyping/

direct digital manufacturing lab. The first year provides a gen-
