Institutes and People
The Institute of Urbanism and Landscape is dedicated
to teaching, research and development within urban-
ism and landscape architecture. It emphasizes the need
for a broad multidisciplinary approach, with particular
attention paid to challenges posed by the design of the
urban and regional urban environment and the associ-
ated landscape systems. Academic areas include: Urban
Practices comprising urban design, urban planning,
urban transformations, regional planning; Landscape
Practices comprising landscape urbanism, urban ecol-
ogy, water management; UrbanMedia and Technolog-
ical Practices comprising the networked city, mapping,
GIS; and history and theory of urbanism and landscape
with a focus on urban planning history.
The Institute has developed a strong international
profile, with an established network of partner institu-
tions within practice teaching and research. Networks
involving six East African universities as well as uni-
versities and institutions in Vietnam have been active
in teaching as well as research for a number of years.
Spring 2013 saw the start of the Future North research
project, which is a collaboration with the Barents In-
stitute and the Institute of Design.
In addition to the master’s programs in architecture
and Landscape architecture, the Institute offers a 2-year
Master in Landscape Architecture, and a post-profes-
sional Master in Urbanism.
