DRÖFN – A SEAFOOD MARKET
SVEINN THORARINNSSON
Supervisors: Beate Marie Hølmebakk and Einar Bjarki Malmquist
An abandoned shipyard in one of the oldest harbour towns in Ice-
land is transformed into a seafood market and a multifunctional
outdoors area, partly covered by a roof, with a geothermically
heated concrete floor. The Shipbuilding industry in the town of
Hafnarfjörður started over 200 years ago at this exact plot. Ships
were built there until few years ago when the practice was moved
away from the city centre. The current shipyard hall and the rails
are used to create a space where inhabitants can rediscover the
town’s origins. Here one can buy the catch of the day at the fish
shop or eat local seafood in the restaurant on the second floor. The
people can experience the harbour from the waterfront. Dröfn is
the name of the daughter of the sea god Ægir and his wife Rán.
