Thisproject’s focus is a centre forholistic cancer treatment close to theHaukeland
University Hospital in Bergen. Cancer patients who are being treated at
Haukeland,will beable tocome tothecentre tobesocial, attendclassesandreceive
treatment for side effects of their cancer treatment, radiation- and chemo ther-
apy. The centre offers acupuncture, massage and various water treatments, yoga
classes, therapy sessions with psychologists and peers, as well as exercise. Cook-
ing classes are also offered to patients who have to live with new diet restrictions.
The building consists of an elevated main volume with a free span of twen-
ty-two meters. The main volume spans between the terrain on one side and
a glass volume on the other. The glass volume consists of an entrance, stairs
and an elevator, as well as the current pool and other water treatment rooms.
Underneath the main volume, a covered outdoor space emerges, which shields
the building’s users from rain, and also provides a shade, which benefits the
light-sensitive patients. Behind the building, an outdoor space is created on a
ledge in the mountain, which is accessible from the main volume. The building
is placed in a dense urban environment, but the design of the main volume and
its façade give its users a sense of safety and protection, while still maintaining
contact with the outside world.
