AHO WORKS Research 2012
Highlights
Guest lectures
⦁
OCCAS’ application to become a national
Centre of Excellence (SSF), placing the re-
search centre on the short list in the final
round.
⦁
Establishing a building research group, with
an endowed chair supported by OBOS.
⦁
Excellent R&D results in maritime research
and “The Ocean Industries”, especially in
cooperation with the Ulstein Group.
⦁
Research efforts in the growing field of Ser-
vice Design, in particular for the public sector.
⦁
Establishing a new research project in the
SAMKUL programme. The project is a part
of AHO’s launch of a new landscape educa-
tion programme in the far north. An Acade-
my of Landscape and Territorial Studies has
been established in Tromsø, in cooperation
with the University of Tromsø.
⦁
A new research project in the BIONÆR pro-
gramme on the use of wood. The quality and
processing of different forest resources and
forms of wood is evaluated within the con-
text of building and construction.
⦁
The development of a professional research
administration at AHO.
Most of the teaching at AHO is done through
project work in a studio context. This provides
a very sound basis for connecting education
and research. All research centres have devel-
oped studio courses and link teaching to re-
search. Almost half of the teaching of master’s
level classes (2 to 2.5 years) is part of research
and development work. Future challenges in
the R&D field revolve largely around recruit-
ment and faculty policies. The School aims to
place a greater emphasis on long-term devel-
opment plans for faculty members, defining
individual research requirements and rights.
The goal is to strengthen the quality of our re-
search by providing more coherent research
resources for the best researchers. Connecting
AHO’s education programme and the School’s
work on R&D is a major challenge. One of the
tasks ahead is to utilize the effort, commitment
and creativity in the students’ diploma projects
more systematically. A general challenge is to
make AHO’s research more practice based
and also more directly relevant to the practice
of architecture and design. R&D at AHO is
well embedded in international research net-
works but this needs to be made more visible
through participation in internationally fund-
ed research projects. Ten years ago AHOwas a
newcomer in research within architecture and
design. Today the school is set up as a profes-
sional research organization.
