of the redevelopment of the area. The involvement of
artists with spatial production is the main focus of the
investigation and the analysis is based on data con-
structed during participatory observations. Through
the notion of skilled perception the role and skills of
artists are discussed within the larger pluralistic pro-
cess of the redevelopment of Bjørvika.

OUR WAY OR THE HIGHWAY? CHANGING
JOURNEYS IN THE INFORMAL CITY
SUPERVISORS: Karl Otto Ellefsen and Edward Robbins
This project evaluates urbanism associated with on-go-
ing transformation of road infrastructure in Nairobi. It
presents informal urbanismwith a focus on connections
created or altered in unintended ways by the transfor-
mation of road infrastructure. The central argument is
that such creation or alteration of connections (and the
resultant adaptations) suggest emergent urban process-
es that can neither be fathomed nor examined by tradi-
tional tools of urbanism and narrow classifications of
informality. The project promotes a diachronic view of
urban transformation not just as a historic process but
as an often complex, spontaneous and evolving process
that reconfigures space in ways that excoriate conven-
tional urban planning and design tools.

THE ‘ROOMING’ TENEMENTS OF NAIROBI: A STUDY
OF DOMESTIC LIFESTYLES AND ARCHITECTURE
SUPERVISORS: Edward Robbins, AHO, Karl Otto Ellefsen,
AHO, Tom Anyamba, UoN
Single room dwelling in tenements in Nairobi is a
housing of ‘choice’ for many tenants as indicated by
growth projections over the past few years. This study
intends to create an understanding of how tenants live
in a tenement environment. To achieve this, a study of
the tenants’ domestic lifestyles and the architecture
of the tenements are being investigated with a view
to revealing themes, patterns and linkages that can
explain their interaction. It’s also intended to establish
how this knowledge can be made meaningful in pursu-
ing design strategies and policy formulation.

NORTHERN TERRITORIES IN TRANSFORMATION
PROJECT AFFILIATION:
FUTURE NORTH
SUPERVISOR: Kelly Shannon
Today, transformations in the relationship between
polities and space are stressed in the northern lati-
tudes more than anywhere else on the globe. Imaging
and measuring of transformation of these territories
are undergoing fundamental changes, with an array of
new sensing technologies linked to control, survey and
monitoring of a world that is undergoing vast urban
and material reconfigurations. New images document
and intercept global migration, survey effects of climate
change, patrol sea routes, control public spaces, measure
efficacy of public policy, detect environmental condi-
tions, communicate complex datasets and monitor life.
How can remote sensing be used in recomposing our
territories?

‘SENSIBLE’ LANDSCAPES
PROJECT AFFILIATION:
FUTURE NORTH
SUPERVISOR: Kelly Shannon
Landscape practices under pressure. This PhD looks
at how mapping practices take part in the negotiation
of future conditions in the Arctic. It studies Norwe-
gian and Swedishmineral strategies and contemporary
Sámi reindeer husbandry. Pastoral, urban, recreation-
al, industrial, strategic, extractive and infrastructural
landscape practices are area extensive and compete
on the same land- and seascapes. The project centres
on the negotiative role of the architect to produce new
knowledge. Methods used include fieldwork, docu-
ment analysis, researcher media presence, diverse
media production and analysis, participatory obser-
vation, and learning frommultiple perspectives, inter-
views and conversations.
