SACRED SERVICES
FUNDING:
CSI: NFR FUNDED
ADVISOR: Simon Clatworthy
MAIN EVENTS: A ritual workshop at AHO and Oslo School
of Marketing with service design and marketing students.
‘The role of the sacred is important to us and our
human condition as it allows us to experience a high-
er state of existence” (Mircea Eliade). Understanding
and utilizing elements of the sacred in NSD seems to
offer real potential for delivering unique and ’higher
state’ experiences. Rituals for example offer structure
to time and frame works for experiential high points
and high seasons. Myths offer symbolic and binding
narratives for service customers, which can create new
fellowships that build lasting communities of a brand
faithful. The research takes an explorative and practi-
cal approach based upon theories from social science.
From these insights a new set of practical design tools
are being developed which will be tested and assessed
in NSD settings.

SYMBIOTIC REALITIES
FUNDING:
AHO, OCEAN OF LIGHT
ADVISOR: Andrew Morrison
“Symbiotic Realities” explores media visualizations
beyond the screen. By embedding digital media into
physical reality, it is possible to create far more immer-
sive and intuitive user experiences which merge phys-
ical and virtual, and use one’s whole body, movement
and environment as interface.

DESIGNING INNOVATION
FUNDING:
AHO, D-SIDE PROJECT (NFR)
ADVISORS: Håkan Edeholt, Andrew Morrison
The PhD project “Designing Innovation” investigates
the ways professional designers work and how design
influences innovation processes. The project is part of
the larger research project D-side. The aimof this study
is to develop a more consistent understanding among
professional designers of the contribution from design
knowledge. The study looks at the types of design abil-
ities which provide better working conditions for the
development of innovations in product development.
