AHO WORKS RESEARCH 2012
Centre for Design Research
SenseMemory, CommunicatingMovement, and
networks such as Ocean of Light. Our senior col-
league Birger Sevaldson has also ran the AHO
Gallery in 2012 making space for research-re-
lated collaboration and outputs.
Our doctoral researchers are active within
research projects, often engaged in co-publica-
tion with senior researchers and one another.
This is part of the ethos of design research for
which we have begun to establish a reputation
internationally. Our doctoral researchers also
take part in cutting-edge international research
events, in areas including full body movement,
choreography and interaction. In 2012, fifteen
PhDs at AHO were at the Centre for Design
Research, and the centre contributed sub-
stantially to AHO’s doctoral school, with the
Director doubling as PhD programme coordi-
nator. This allowed us to draw design deeper
into our doctoral education, but importantly
also allowed us to make clearer and stronger
connections with the other institutes and cen-
tres at AHO, together with international guest
lecturers and project related events. This was
most evident in collaboration with Urbanism
through the YOUrban project, between Archi-
tecture, RCAT and Systems Oriented Design,
and via the seminar initiatives of OCCAS. AHO
also co-hosted the Nordes 2012 summer school
with InterMedia, University of Oslo.
Research seminars have been numerous in
2012 and reflect the importance of shared com-
municative spaces in design research. One key
event which resonates in 2012 is the internation-
al Relating System Thinking and Design Sem-
inar held in October. The seminar once again
welcomed an international line up of presenters
extending beyond formal design research, indi-
cating our interdisciplinary research activity
and means of inquiry. This was followed up by
the Augmented Reality and the City, Scholarly
Publishing and Design seminar, and a small con-
ference on Design and the Digital Humanities,
the latter one of the first to make such linkages
internationally. These seminars are connected
to research publications and a number of book
projects initiated in 2012, such as in Systems
Oriented Design and from the delTA project.
In 2012 we were frequently in the media
(winning Norsk Form’s opinion article compe-
tition; a finalist for the international VIMEO
online video awards) and have a deliberate
strategy to try to bridge the complexities of
design research with their contexts of use and
public engagement. We look forward to further
collaboration with our students and research
partners and to building design research
knowledge and critique together with others
outside AHO.
