The thesis analyzes different deployments – graphic and conceptual – of the dia-
gram, and its implications for architectural practice, giving priority to the identifica-
tion of general trends concerning intentions, repertoire as well as attitudes towards
the role and task of the architect. The investigation is based on two forms of primary
empirical material. Firstly on visual diagrams acquired through a mass sampling in
architectural journals in the time period between 1995 and 2005, and secondly, on
texts and diagrams presented in three different architectural journals dedicated
to the diagram and published between 1998 and 2000. The focus of the thesis has
been to position the various deployments of diagrams in relation to changes in the
socio-material and cultural context surrounding architectural practice, as well as
in relation to different diachronic trajectories.
