PLANETVEIEN 12
PROJECT LEADER:
Elisabeth Tostrup
A number of projects were completed within the Insti-
tute of Form, Theory and History, in 2012 in parallel
with projects within OCCAS.
Planetveien 12. Arne Kors-
mo og Grete Prytz Kittelsens hus
(Pax Forlag, 2012) is the
result of an extended period of AHO funded research
by Professor Elisabeth Tostrup. The book discusses
the house that Arne Korsmo designed for himself and
his wife, the enamel artist Grete Prytz Kittelsen. Com-
pleted in 1955, the house is an icon of modern Scandi-
navian architecture, an experimental building, which
has been voted one of the tenmost significant buildings
in Norway and described as one of the country’s most
important private houses. “Planetveien 12” has been
published extensively in magazines and anthologies.
These publications have, however, only addressed the
house in brief. Thoroughly researched and archive-
based, Tostrup’s monograph offers an in-depth study
from an architectural and design history point of view,
and presents an engaged and analytical discussion of
this ground-breaking building.
The book provides important biographical and histor-
ical context for the house’s inhabitants/designers, dis-
cussing the lives of Arne Korsmo – a prominent Norwe-
gian architect, and Grete Prytz Kittelsen – a pioneering
designer and influential member of the World Craft
Council. The couple were associated with some of the
major international schools and institutions in the field
of architecture and design in the twentieth century. All
of this is given due consideration in the book.
The book will be published in English as
Planetveien
12. The Korsmo House. A Scandinavian Icon
by Artifice,
London.
