AHO AT THE OPEN CITY IN RITOQUE
RCAT CONSTRUCTIONS AND EXHIBITION, OPEN CITY OF RITOQUE
AND GALLERI AHO, AUGUST - SEPTEMBER 2012
ORGANIZERS:
Michael U. Hensel, Christian Hermansen
The Masters in Architecture Scarcity and Creativity Studio course and RCAT
members undertook four projects at the Open City in Ritoque Chile. All projects
are set within the Pacific coastal dune landscape of the Open City in Ritoque
and need to respond to questions of landscape, scarcity, foundations in sand,
considerable wind loads and earth quake impact. These full-scale experimental
projects are context-specific and can be analyzed over time in relation to the
impact of context and provisions for use.

The
Fragile Mon-
ument – On Conservation and Modernity
by Thordis Arrhenius at the Nordic
Pavilion at the 2012 Venice Biennale, with a discussion on the need for critical
architectural scholarship and publications. Focusing on particular debates in the
history of conservation where critical uncertainties, ambivalence and heated
discussion have brought forward novel ideas of how to save the past, this book
provides new insights into the reasons and causes for the development of a
heritage discourse in modern western society. Through a series of detailed case
studies, from the iconoclastic crises of the French Revolution to Le Corbusier’s
rescue of the past in his modernisation plans for Paris, The Fragile Monument
shows how discourses of saving and protecting have transformed the monu-
ment from an object that originally communicated permanence to one that is
perceived as fragile and in need of protection.
